I need your help – a memory thing

Guys, I need your help. Recently a childhood memory came back to my mind and since that moment I have been wondering, wondering, but I cannot find the roots. The memory I’m talking of is a scene from a movie. I don’t know why I remember that particular part, but apparently it had an impact on me, since I only remember that. I must have been seven at the time or something…

So, I think the scene is from a Cleopatra movie – though I am not sure why I even think that. In this scene, the woman sits there among her servants. She wants to drink, so one of the servants takes the chalice (it was more of a chalice than anything else) and takes a sip – she’s the kind of servant who has to ‘test’ the food to see if it’s been poisoned. She then takes a cloth and cleans the edge of the cup. Then the woman who I believe was Cleopatra asks her why she did that. When the servant doesn’t answer, she commands her to drink again. The servant doesn’t want to at first but then drinks and dies – she tried to poison Cleopatra. Then the scene changes and there are white curtains blown by the wind.

This is what I remember from the movie, but so far I haven’t found this scene yet. I would love to see it again though, to see how much of my memory is true and why it had such an impact on me that about 12 years later on I still remember this. Can you please help me out?

Whether it's from this movie ornot, it's still an impressive dress she's wearing. Source.

Source.

Edit: it was in fact the movie of the picture – Cleopatra from 1963! And my memory turned out to be quite wrong. I remembered it really differently. The basics are the same, but the clothes, the setting, the angle were all different. It’s nice to see it again though, and it seems to be a good movie as well. Thanks to everyone helping me out on this one! You rock!

  1. I got nothing. Have any other details? Was it in color or black and white? Did you see in it a movie theater or on tv? around what year?

    • I believe it was in colour, and they were wearing white dresses. I saw it on tv, must have been 2002 or something close to that, maybe even earlier. I believe there was a scream as well, when the scenes changed.

I’m not sure whether it was about Cleopatra, but it was somewhere warm though.

  4. I think this is the movie you are looking for:
    Cleopatra (1963) – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056937/
“A trusted servant attempts to assassinate the main character through poisoning. When her attempt is detected by another servant, the main character compels the assassin to drink from the cup that she had poisoned. The assassin promptly collapses and dies.”

      • Based on the description, it seems like your memory was pretty spot on.
And, we both know I didn’t help all that much. You’d already gotten links before I had time to respond. ๐Ÿ˜›

      • The basic items were the same, everything else turned out to be different though :).
Yeah, it was Michaels link who helped me out, but I’m still glad that you posted the link as well, I appreciate your effort! So still thanks ;).

      • You’re welcome. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Yay you got your answer!
Funny how memory can change minute details. One of the reasons eye witness testimony can be so risky to rely on.
Sounds like you remembered the important stuff though!

    • Yeah indeed. I always seem to be confident about my ‘good’ memory, but this is a good reminder of how much you can change things.
It’s nice to see it again though :D.

Was about to say the same as I got to the update part of it ^^

Sadly, this reminded me of a much worse sort of blackout I have, a literary one. and it’s been from such a bizarre collection of – probably, if I got it right – eastern european dystopian novels that chances are, I’ll never find out. Meeeh ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

    • Ah, that sucks! I’ve only read one, ‘We’ by Zamjatin – but I do have a book full of names and titles. Feel free to shoot some names or storylines and perhaps I can help you out a little…

I don’t have much hope really… my guess is it was a czech author…
it was something dystopian about a dictator, and how he described why he tortured and cut roses as an allegory to the people. it was a bizarre bit of storytelling, and the setting was scifi and nightmare-ish. in other words: I want to re-read it ๐Ÿ˜‰

      • It sounds like a really interesting book but I’m afraid that will be a hard one to find again indeed… Good luck though!

meeh, I’ve given up. maybe if I let go, the new agers prove to be right and IT finds me ๐Ÿ˜€

      • Hahaha, yeah! It’s like with guys they say, ignore them and they come crawling at you ;).

Hahaha! This reminds me of my brother. Sometimes he will call me to find out the name of a song that he only remembers one line from. But he is a bit of a stoner.

    • Haha, okay :D. But that’s not too weird, right? I’ve got that too sometimes… But one line is enough to find it again mostly :D.

It happens to all of us. I keep trying to find this movie where a little girl walks up the stairs and down a hallway running a pizza wheel along the wall. It’s creepy.

      • Sounds creepy indeed… Try searching in the horror part of the movie world I’d suggest ;).

  10. It’s definitely Cleopatra with Liz Taylor. Did you know that flick almost went bust because it was SO expensive to make? No surprises here. Even 60 years on, it’s the best movie ever and no remake can ever come close. EVER. ๐Ÿ™‚
    Her wardrobe there is AMAZING.

    • Indeed! I’m always watching her clothes, they are so very elegant and beautiful… And the actors are great too, with nice dialogues and so on. Such a good movie!

  11. Btw, the very same thing happened to me – I had a memory of a guitar score. A very vivid one but had no idea what song was it! It bothered me so badly until I found where it was from. It was Uriah Heep – July Morning ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Ah, that’s even harder! How can you find a tune that’s stuck in your hear again? Glad you eventually found it! I have that quite often as well, just a tune or song in my head and I know exaclty how it goes but I don’t know what it is…

  12. I just came across this blog now because– wait for it– I had googled “cleopatra poison servant” and was looking for the same exact scene that you described! I was a young kid too when I first saw this scene; I was probably around 6 or 7 and I must have walked into the living room when my dad was watching the movie. At the time, I remember feeling bad for the servant (I felt she must have been told by someone more powerful than herself to carry out the plan and she just seemed so helpless) and at the time, I couldn’t understand why she didn’t just fling the cup away and try to escape. Haha. Anyways, that was the only scene I remembered from this movie too, and tonight the memory came back to me and I was trying to find what movie it came from (IMBD doesn’t really mention the scene). It’s so weird how this particular scene had such a lasting impact on both of our memories! I just wanted to share that story with you and thank you for clarifying which movie it was from. Cheers!

    • Ah great! Thanks for telling me this! I’m glad that I could help in a way ๐Ÿ˜€ It’s not always easy to find the source of your memory again – it’s mostly quite deformed, and try to explain it…!
I’ve watched the entire movie after this post, and liked it a lot, so I recommend to do the same ๐Ÿ™‚
